The Bet
I have just finished reading the entirety of The Bet in the space of one day and absolutely couldn’t put it down. Compelling and gripping, I couldn’t bring myself to stop reading until I knew how it ended.

The Bet by Anna Johnstone leads you on a wild ride through the depths of the Underworld, the halls of Olympus and the realm of mortals. The story begins in the depth of the Underworld where Charon gets dragged into witnessing a tussle between Dionysus and Yahweh. The brawl results in a brash and poorly worded bet between the opposing Gods. Following the Gods on their whirlwind adventure of subterfuge and sabotage, the reader is gripped not only by a captivating story, but also by likeable and enjoyable characters.

The author displays excellent knowledge of history, mythology and religion which lays the foundation for the story. Using a mixture of Gods from different pantheons, the Author does a brilliant job of portraying the tension that comes with a group of individuals harbouring very different intents and beliefs. It was especially interesting to see how Gods from different pantheons interacted with each other using power plays or underhanded tactics.

The personification of these Gods gives the reader an entertaining insight into their jobs and I particularly enjoyed the sarcasm and pragmatism many of these characters exhibited throughout the book. (Charon remains a favourite of mine.) The author’s portrayal of a strong and passionate Cassandra really resonated with me and I found myself rooting for her all the way. The mischievous- and often reckless- Dionysus and Hermes have a very endearing brotherly relationship. Their attempts to derail the bet produce problem after problem that the reader questioning how they will resolve the chaos they leave in their wake.

Aside from being an exciting and enjoyable read, the book also has short chapters, making it useful and ideal for those readers on the move or without a lot of time on their hands. Well written and an easy read, I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in history and mythology and would enjoy a comedic adventure.”

Charon Unguarded

“Absolutely loved this book, the story is engaging and funny. I love the use of different deities from different sections of mythology rather than just sticking to one, and seeing how they would interact. Well worth a read, cannot wait for The Bet now.”

The Bet

If you have read Charon Unguarded, or are a fan of mythology, you will love The Bet.

In Charon Unguarded we met Charon as he suffers as a doorman.
In the Bet we find out how the various pantheons were kicked out of the immortal realms by a bet Dionysus as his brother Hermes and Charon watch. It is a bet that will have wide ranging repercussions.

This is a wonderful look at various aspects and personalities of the old gods, predominantly from the Greek/Roman mythologies.

I loved it, and would love to see more exploration of this kind in the rest of the pantheons or Fae worlds.”

Charon Unguarded

“A quirky novel with a delightfully sarcastic twist. Gods, ice giants, the end of days and unexpected takes on character types. Truly a delight to read.”

Sean - Amazon

“While this maybe second in the series, the author cleverly sets The Bet up so that it isn’t essential that you’ve read the first one (although it’s great so please do). The set up is all the gods (and I mean ALL) are real and constantly bickering.

It’s similar to some other great books with the same take, most notably Good Omens and American Gods although because of the humour it’s more like the former in tone. The story cracks on with Charon once again being the voice of sanity in a world of beings with God sized egos. It’s a romp, it’s fun and it’s always those bloody nymphs!”
